Nature’s Blessings: Lessons from a Beautiful Book

Cover of Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message

If you are looking for a book with an absolutely beautiful message, look no further. Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message was written by Chief Jake Swamp, a Native American Peace Advocate who was born on the Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation. His message is based on an ancient message of peace and gratitude for Mother Earth and all life around us. Chief Swamp delivered these words around the world, and they are still spoken at ceremonial gathers of the Six Nations.

This colorfully illustrated book shares a page after page of the wonders of nature. Each page gives thanks to the gifts of our world. It reminds us how lucky we are for the cool grass beneath our feet and the beautiful songs of the birds. Also at the back of the book is a basic Mohawk version of the address, sharing the beauty of their language.

Here are a few ideas to extend the lessons with your child:

  • Discuss the wonders of nature. What gifts of Mother Earth can we see around us right now?
  • What can we be grateful for on a daily basis?
  • How do we interact with the natural world?
  • Try reading this first thing in the morning. How does it affect your day by starting with gratitude?
